Influence of material composition on nanosecond pulsed laser micromachining of zirconia-alumina composites

Due to their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, zirconia-alumina composites are promising materials for bio-implant applications, including dental hip-joint implants. A higher content of zirconia phase is beneficial the fracture toughness composite material therefore more suitable implant while alumina resistant wear than zirconia, dominated often used in Studies about laser micromachining both single available literature. However, understanding on how relative two phases will affect performance lacking. In this paper, influence composition nanosecond-pulsed investigated by varying content. Single pulse spot machining groove experiments were performed four graded ceramics with different contents. The parameters, energy, width, repetition rate, scanning speed removal behavior surface characteristic experimentally. It was found that lower easier be machined, which characterized rates, high contained materials. addition, susceptible thermal cracking under excessive energy input. Besides, inhomogeneity microstructure have substantial morphology spots machined short pulses. This research shows significant processing should helpful selecting optimal parameters achieving desirable quality composites.
